The Rensselaer Phi Chapter was formally installed on April 26, 1940 after petitioning to the National Council for a chapter of Pi Tau Sigma. Twice a year, outstanding students studying mechanical engineering are invited to join the honor society. Juniors in the top quarter of their class and seniors in the top third of their class meet the academic standards.
Once invited, eligible members must complete two hours of community service, polish a brass bent, and attend the initiation ceremony.
